When I was looking for an electric scooter I researched for ages and looked everywhere for somewhere to tell me the best electric scooters U.K. so I could decide.
The thing I soon realised is that electric scooters are currently banned on U.K. roads, aside from some legal rentals. But I still needed an electric scooter to get around campus (and some of my friends use it to ride on private land, like farms and holiday camps).

So I put together this guide to help everyone understand where you can ride electric scooters, when the law might change for public road use, and also my 6 best electric scooters U.K...
🙋♂️Expert review by…

Hi I’m Jamie. I’m one of the scooter specialists for ScootersForAdults.co.uk. and I mainly review lightweight and electric scooters.
I own 9 scooters, yes that many, but I’m an amateur stunt scooter rider, and also scoot with my son most weekends. I love electric scooters, and can’t think of a better way of combining speed with easy transport. Hope you find my best electric scooters U.K. guide useful…
🏆 Best Electric Scooters U.K…
I’ve written many reviews for Scooters For Adults and in this ultimate electric scooters guide I am combining many aspects of electric scooter topics together – the legality, the current trial schemes, my top 5 electric scooters and more. So below are easy links to help you navigate to the sections you want to know about…
- ⚖️ Are Electric Scooters Legal in the UK?
- 🏆 My 5 Best Electric Adult Scooters UK
- 🔌 Electric Scooter Comparison Table
- 🔋 What to Consider When Choosing an Electric Scooter
- ✅ Summary: Deciding Which Electric Scooter To Buy
⚖️ Are Electric Scooters Legal in the U.K?
Let’s clear this up first, and get it out of the way.
- ✅ Rental e-scooters (like those from VOI, Lime, or Tier) are legal to ride in trial cities.
- ❌ Privately owned scooters are still illegal on roads, pavements, and cycle lanes in the UK.
- ✅ You can legally ride your own scooter on private land with the landowner’s permission.
If you’re buying now, think of it as a future-proof purchase, or for private/commuter campus use, which is what I use mine for.
🚇 Can You Take An Electric Scooter on the London Tube Network?
– There Are Safety Concerns Over Batteries
As of 2022, Transport for London (TfL) has banned all privately owned e-scooters and e-unicycles from the entire TfL network – which was a real shame to be honest.
This ban was introduced after there were multiple incidents where lithium-ion batteries caught fire, posing a risk to passengers.
🚫 So, no – unfortunately you can’t take an electric scooter on the Tube, even if it’s folded up!
– But, Are Non-Electric Scooters Allowed?

Yes – non-electric kick scooters are allowed. As long as they’re foldable and don’t obstruct passengers or doorways, you can travel with them freely across the network.
This is another reason why manual scooters remain the best choice for commuting in London, they’re legal, safe, and Tube-friendly.
🛴 So, Where Can You Legally Ride Rental E-Scooters in the UK?
If you’re not using your own electric scooter, you can legally ride rental e-scooters in many UK cities as part of government-approved trial schemes.
These rental scooters are:
- Road legal
- Fully insured
- Capped at safe speeds (typically 12.5–15.5mph)
- Require a valid driving licence (provisional OK)
– Trial cities with legal e-scooter schemes (as of 2025):

London (some boroughs), Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol, Milton Keynes, Southampton, Portsmouth, Nottingham, York, Newcastle, Cambridge…and more
– Brands you’ll see in use:
VOI (most widespread), Lime, Dott, Tier, and Neuron
You’ll usually need to download their app, scan your ID, and complete a brief safety tutorial. Then you’re good to scoot!
📝 Note: These trials are subject to change. The UK government is still considering national e-scooter legalisation, so I’ll keep this section updated as things evolve. Apologies if it’s incorrect when you’re reading it as things are moving fast and ScooterForAdults.co.uk tend to update articles seasonally.
🏆 My 6 Best Electric Adult Scooters U.K.
1. Pure Advance Flex

- 💰 Approx. £799
- 🔋 40km range
- ⚖️ Lightweight + foldable
- 🏁 Max speed 15.5 mph
- 🚂 500 W motor (710 W peak)
- 💧 IP65 dust & water resistant
- 🚦 Front & rear LED lights / handlebar & footpad indicators
- 🫳 Pure Control steering stabilisation
- 🪫Charging time 5 hours 45 mins
This is such an awesome e-scooter, I’d say the best electric scooter U.K., and you’ll find it top of many electric scooter reviews. It has a side-riding stance, foldable frame, and modern look, this scooter is future-focused. It’s ultra-portable and perfect for apartment dwellers or tight spaces. When I lived in my 3rd floor flat in Harbourside, Bristol, I owned this scooter and found so easy to transport.
There’s some brilliant unboxing videos and reviews out there for those that require a bit more info, such as this one by the manufacturers themselves Pure Electric, and this one explains how to ride it (as it’s a bit different to your conventional scooter, but in a good way).
And here are some visuals of my actual ride. This is the black version, which looks just as cool as the silver one. Feet go either side of the main frame, which is so unique but crazy that this hasn’t been adopted more widely, as it’s so comfortable to ride. You can also see how it looks folded here, really compact.

2. Pure Air4 Pro

- 💰 Approx. £549
- 🔋 50km range
- 🛞 Big 10″ wheels
- 🏁 Max speed 15.5 mph
- 🚂 500 W motor (710 W peak)
- 💧 IP65 dust & water resistant
- 🚦 Front & rear LED lights / handlebar & footpad indicators
- 🫳 Pure Control steering stabilisation
- 🪫Charging time 6 hours
Great balance of comfort, range, and waterproofing. A solid ride for heavier adults and UK weather. You’ll get great ride control and big wheels for stability. Ideal if you want something durable now, and legal-ready later.
Here’s some close-ups of the scooter which we’ve gone into more detail on in our Pure Air 4 Pro review. But for the purposes of this best electric scooters U.K. guide, I can confirm it’s such an awesome, slick scooter. It has the traditional flat deck, like most scooters, but unlike the Pure Flex above. That being said it’s so easy to use with the function control on the handlebar, lights on the wheels, and super sturdy deck and frame.

🫰Looking for a cheaper Pure Electric e-scooter?
Pure Electric do have a non-pro version of the Air4 Pro, which is simply called the Pure Air5 priced a £399 and currently their cheapest e-scooter available (there is also an Pure Air5 Pro available priced at £450). Here’s a bit of a comparison of the two to help you out.
| Feature | Pure Air | Pure Air Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Motor Power | 250W – better for flat terrain | 350W – handles hills better |
| Range | Up to 18.5 miles (30 km) | Up to 22.4 miles (36 km) |
| Display Position | Centered | Right-hand side |
| Handlebar Grips | Foam | Rubber |
| Weight | ~16.5 kg | ~16.5 kg |
| Water Resistance | IP65 | IP65 |
| Bluetooth & App | Yes | Sometimes (model dependent) |

Basically, the Pure Air Pro is a more powerful option, ideal for riders who need better hill-climbing ability and longer range. The Pure Air is a solid, budget-friendly alternative perfect for urban commuting on flatter routes. Both offer excellent water resistance and solid construction though and honestly, both are worth buying.
🆚 Comparison: Pure Air4 Pro vs Pure Advance Flex
Both of these electric scooters from Pure Electric are built for a similar use, but cater to different needs. The Air4 Pro sticks to a traditional design, offering power, range, and comfort for normal journeys. While, I’ve found the Advance Flex has this unique riding approach (sideways position) and has an ultra-compact fold, making it ideal portability and storage are the most important thing to you. It’s a bit like a Brompton fold up bike, versus a regular bike.
| Feature | Pure Air4 Pro | Pure Advance Flex |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Traditional e-scooter | Sideways-riding, compact fold |
| Range | Up to 25 miles | Up to 24.8 miles |
| Motor Power | 500W (Peak 710W) | 500W |
| Ride Comfort | Rear suspension, pneumatic tyres | Wide deck, low centre of gravity |
| Foldability | Standard folding | Multi-directional, ultra-compact fold |

3. i9Max iScooter (Electric)

- 💰 Approx. £498
- 🔋 Up to 25-30 miles (~40-50 km) range
- 💧 IP-rating ~IP54
- 🪫 Charging time ~6-7 hours
- 🏋️ Weight: ~15-16 kg
And lastly, you can’t ignore the i9Max from iScooter. I’ve owned one of these about 6 months now and it’s actually my go-to electric scooter now. It has great charging time, folds super easily and the range is just what I need.
I wrote more about it in our iScooter review, plus their other models, the i8, i9, and i10Plus, so take a look for more info.

Here’s a cool video I found which shows the scooter better than I could. I really like the way it shows the dual suspension, front and back, which definitely makes this an awesome scooter.
4. XIAOMI 4 Pro Electric Folding Scooter

- 💰 Approx. £499
- 🔋 50km range
- 🏁 Max speed 15.5 mph
- 💧 IPX4 water resistance
- 🚦 Front & rear LED lights
- 🫳 Dual brakes
- ⚡ Easy fold with telescopic stem
- 📅 2 year guarantee
- 🪫Charging time 9 hours
From a top brand XIAOMI, their 4 Pro scooter is one of the best around. I’ve owned one for 2 years (argh now my 2 year guarantee has just finished – though I didn’t have to use it) and just love it. It has dual brakes, and really easy fold mechanism.
Ok, the charging time is longer than some at 9 hours, compared to Pro Electric scooters at 5-6 hours, but not as long as the Razor below at 12 hours. But with this scooter you’ll find easy handling, a nice magnetic connector and light brakes.
Unboxing video – Here’s a really useful unboxing video and overview of the Xiaomi 4 Pro if you’d like some more info. I do plan to add my own videos to this guide soon (when I get a haircut!).
My own review – I finally got round to writing my own review. But not a video one yet. So for now check out my Xiaomi 4 Pro review.
5. Razor E300 E-Scooter

- 💰 Approx. £499
- 🔋 50km range
- 🏁 Max speed 15 mph
- 🏋️ Weight 21kg
- 🦵 Retractable kickstand
- 🫳 Hand-operated rear brake
- 🪫Charging time 12 hours
The Razor E300 is compact and reasonaly priced e-scooter. I don’t own one of these but a good friend does and we often go riding together. Having tested it I can assure you it’s a solid, smooth ride.
The charging time is a little lengthy compared to most at 12 hours and you don’t get any more range for that. But for more of a first time, beginner scooter, this is a worthy choice.
My own review – Check out my Razor E300 review. It gives a bit more detail of the above and I go into detail whether it’s a good quality scooter or not.
6. Segway-Ninebot E3 Pro

- 💰 Approx. £419
- 🔋 55km range
- 🛞 Big 10″ wheels
- 🏁 Max speed 15.5 mph
- 🚂 450 W motor (900 W peak)
- 💧 IPX5 water resistance
- 🚦 Front & rear LED lights
- 📅 2 year guarantee
- 🪫Charging time 7 hours
For an e-scooter with great balance, comfort, range, and waterproofing, the Segway-Ninebot E3 Pro is one of the best in the market. A solid ride for heavier adults and UK weather. You’ll get great ride control and big wheels for stability. Ideal if you want something durable now, and legal-ready later.
Segway have put together a brilliant overview of their scooter here. Or check out my own Segway Ninebot E3 Pro review. It has 10 inch self-sealing tyres, dual brake system, and brilliant lighting for illumination for those night rides.
I’ve taken some snaps of my brother’s Segway. He loves it and I’ve ridden it often. You can see how robust it is. The deck is big, ample room for both your feet. The wheels are really solid, with lights. And the handlebar controls are also PlayStation like, in a good way!

🔋 What to Consider When Choosing an Electric Scooter
From the 9 electric scooters that I’ve owned I can tell you they can vary in performance, comfort, and longevity. So I thought it would useful to break down some of the key features to consider before you buy an e-scooter in the UK:
⚡ 1. Battery & Range
- Range is how far the scooter can travel on a single charge, typically anywhere from 12 to 35 miles.
- If you’re commuting daily, aim for a scooter with at least 20+ miles of range to avoid midweek charges.
- Check battery charge time too. Most charge in 4–8 hours.
💪 2. Power
- Most models range between 500 Watts and 2.5k scooter power. So check this when you buy.
- You can get low end at 250 Watts but these won’t be that effective to be honest.
- The power tends to come from the rear wheels where there is the electric motor.
🚶 3. Weight & Portability
- If you’re carrying the scooter on public transport or up stairs, weight matters.
- Models under 17kg are manageable, but anything heavier may become a burden during mixed commutes.
- Remember non-electric adult kick scooters are only 4-5kg typically. Considerably less, so if that’s a concern, go for a non-electric scooter instead.
💨 4. Speed
- UK law limits electric scooters to 15.5 mph, and most models adhere to this.
- Faster speeds may seem appealing but won’t be legal for public road use.
- Some e-scooters do go up to 50 mph, yes that fast! But these aren’t practical in the UK under current conditions.
🌧️ 5. Waterproof Rating
- Look for at least an IPX4 rating if you’ll be riding in the rain.
- IPX5 or IP65 gives more confidence for wet conditions, ideal for our rubbish UK weather.
🛞 6. Tyres & Ride Comfort
- Pneumatic (air-filled) tyres offer a smoother ride but can puncture.
- Solid tyres don’t go flat but transfer more bumps.
- Suspension systems also help with uneven roads and pavements, so I recommend always buying an e-scooter with suspension.
🔒 7. Security
- Electric scooters are theft targets (I’ve had one stolen once and it wasn’t a fun experience). Look for models with:
- App-based locking systems
- Physical locks (U-lock or folding lock compatibility)
- Removable batteries (rarer but useful)
🛠️ 8. Support & Maintenance
- Stick to reputable UK sellers, like Currys, with good warranty and repair support.
- Check for spare parts availability and whether your model can be serviced locally.
🤔 Should You Buy an Electric Adult Scooter in the U.K. Now?
Here’s how I’m thinking about it. If you’re planning to:
- Ride on private land
- Commute around work campuses or private parks or farms – you get the drift.
- Get ready for future legalisation
…then yes, now’s a smart time to buy for sure!
Just don’t ride them on public roads or pavements yet, unless it’s a rental scooter in a trial city, like we spoke about above.
✅ Summary: Deciding Which Electric Scooter To Buy & My Top Pick
If you want a reliable, future-proof, UK-friendly electric scooter, these 6 models all strike the right balance of performance. I’ve actually picked very similar models, with not a lot in them other than additional features, like easy folding, speciality hand-breaks and slightly differing weights.
🏆 Top Pick: Pure Advance Flex…

That being said if I had to pick an absolute favourite it would be the Pure Advance Flex. I mean look how cool the folding on this scooter looks, which makes it so easy to carry, let alone how futuristic it looks. Jokes aside, it just performs so well on all fronts. Really easy to ride, it’s fun, and charges quicker than most.
🏆 Or – If you don’t need as advanced: i9Max iScooter…

❓ FAQs: Best Electric Scooters U.K.
The best electric scooter for commuting in the UK depends on your needs, but top picks are the Pure Air3 Pro+ or the XIAOMI 4 Pro Electric Folding Scooter. These offer a strong mix of range, waterproofing, and ride comfort, all essential for the UK weather and road conditions.
Yes, to ride a legal rental scooter, you need at least a provisional driving licence. No licence is required to use an e-scooter on private land, but public use of private scooters remains restricted.
Most commuter-friendly electric scooters offer a range of 15–30 miles, depending on the model, rider weight, and terrain. Higher-end models like the Pure Air3 can stretch beyond 30 miles on a single charge.
Charging times vary by model, but most electric scooters take between 4 to 8 hours for a full charge. High-capacity batteries or fast chargers may shorten or extend this depending on the brand.
For UK use, prioritise Water resistance (IP rating), Pneumatic tyres for wet surfaces, Good range (20+ miles), Portability & weight if commuting, a reliable brand with UK support or warranty.
